Established in 1920, Eddie Bauer, Inc. is a company selling footwear, outerwear, and sportswear for women, men, and children. They have almost 400 outlet and retail stores within North America, but they also sell their products through the Internet, catalogs, and a joint venture in Germany and Japan. Most of their sales come from their apparel line. However, they have also lent their name to furniture, baby products, sunglasses, eyewear, and even Ford SUVs.In March of 1971, General Mills, Inc. bought Eddie Bauer, Inc. for $10 million, or almost 311,000 of General Mills shares from common stock. The acquisition was needed to push General Mills’ efforts in specialty retailing. When General Mills got Eddie Bauer, Inc., it was basically still a business with a mail-order front, although it does have a budding retail arm. This arm was what General Mills was interested in developing.

In 1988, Spiegel, Inc. acquired Eddie Bauer, Inc. but eventually had to file for bankruptcy in 2003. It was also unsuccessful in selling Eddie Bauer, Inc. in 2004. Finally, as a result of reorganization in Spiegel, Inc., the Eddie Bauer Holdings was created in 2005.
